How do you decide which books end up on Boldtype?

Each month, Boldtype's editors and contributing reviewers assemble a long-list of books that speak to a monthly theme. We read the books and review the ones that we'd recommend to our friends. We never accept money from publishers, writers, or marketers to review any of their books.

Why do you sometimes recommend old books?

We believe that good books should have a shelf life longer than a single season. In Boldtype, you'll find that the newest fiction and nonfiction shares real estate with reviews of overlooked gems from years past. This policy confuses some people. We're alright with that. We cover what's worth reading.

I just read a great book or an interesting interview with a new author. How do I tell you about it?

Why didn't you cover the new Thomas Pynchon/Stephen King?

Sometimes we won't cover the big book of the season. There are a couple of possible reasons: either that book hasn't fit with any of our recent themes, we felt it was overexposed, or it was a pretentious, purple, precious piece of poop.

I'm a publicist/author/publisher. Where can I send books for review?

Please contact us at books@boldtype.com to send material to a particular editor. Boldtype also accepts review copies, galleys, and promotional material at our New York office.

Did you read that book I sent you yet?

We try to make sure that all the books we receive are considered by one of our editors. Due to the volume of mail we receive, we are not always able to comment on individual titles.

Where can I buy the books you review?

We have a limited partnership with Powell's Books, the largest independent bookseller in the nation. To purchase the books you read about on Boldtype, or add them to your wishlist, simply click the "buy" link next to each review and you'll be taken to that book's page at Powell's.

How do I start a Boldtype reading group?

We're currently exploring ways to bring our subscribers into the conversation, and reading groups are topping that list. For now you have to continue meeting at your local caffeine dispensary.
